Acrylic nails are artificial extensions created using a mix of two components: acrylic powder which is a polymer and monomer which is the liquid. The powder bonds with the monomer to create a strong nail extension that air dries and lasts up to three weeks. Acrylic powders are available in different colours like clear, cover colors, sheer colors, and glitter powders. Clear is usually for almost acrylic sets and has the strongest adhesion.

Here are a few products that you’ll need in order to get started. First, you’ll need the clear acrylic powder, colored acrylic powder, monomer, acrylic brush (for beginners starts with 12 to 14). Once you create a full set then you need additional products like a dehydrator, primer, nail tips, nail glue, nail file & buffer, topcoat either in a gel or lacquer.

Beginner guide in designing acrylic nails like a pro

If you’re discovering the wonders of at-home manicures then you want to pick the all-in-one products that provide you with all the tools you need. Once you have all the tools needed, here are a few tips to get started.

1. Prepare the nails for acrylic application. Remove dead cuticles by pushing back.
2. Apply the nail tip making sure that it is fitted from sidewall to sidewall. Not too large to hangover and not too thin to avoid the chance of lifting. Putting it right at the edge where the free edge would start and making sure it has enough natural nail bed for the acrylic to adhere to and has a proper foundation.
3. Trim according to your desired length and shape then file.
4. Get rid of the ledge using sanding bands to blend nicely and to have a proper foundation for the acrylic.
5. Apply a dehydrator to dehydrate the nail and to remove excess oil. 
6. Apply primer to the nail bed to create a perfect foundation and prevent lifting. 
7. Apply a thin layer of clear acrylic powder making sure you’re not going to apply all the way to the cuticle area to avoid filing around the cuticle when you go around to your finished filing.
8. Dip the brush from the monomer. You want to make sure that you have enough monomer but not too much. Drag along the top of the acrylic to work with. There are a few techniques when applying the bead like a three-bead, two-bead or one-bead technique.
9. Using a brush, apply the bead to the nail starting from the cuticle part but not touching the skin (depending on the type of bead technique) and drag the brush all the way to the tip, making sure to taper off to the edge. Dry completely. 
10. File the entire finish nail and apply a topcoat if desired or start designing your nail with your favourite polishes and art.
