The best nail drill bits for professionals

There are different nail drill bits such as carbide, diamond, sand bits with mandrel, buffing bits, silicone bits, brush bits, ceramic, and more. Understanding the range of materials and variety of abrasives for different types of cuticles and skin is helpful for your nail journey. Stay with us as we break them down for you.

Carbide bits . These bits have flutes cut into them that provide the cutting power. The more flutes on the bit, the finer the cut. It shaves the top layer of the nails while leaving the surface smooth. Carbide bits are used for shaping or removal of dip powders, acrylics, and gel products. Carbide bits come in various shapes ranging from barrels, cones, footballs, toothpicks and more.  We do not recommend using carbide bits on natural nails as they are extremely sharp.

Sanding bands are probably the most popular drill bit type due to their versatility. Used together with a mandrel, the sanding band is slotted onto the mandrel. Mandrels can come with a metal or rubber barrel. The rubber barrel type can absorb vibrations during use, making it easier to control the sanding band. The sanding bands come in different grits including fine, medium, coarse and extra coarse. They can be used whether you’re right-handed or left-handed, and are universal meaning you can use them in forward or reverse mode. Added bonus; sanding bands are disposable.

Diamond drill bits have diamond dust on them. This is like a metal version of a nail file but comes in different grits and shapes. The diamond particles scratch the surface of the nails to remove the materials. They file the nail either backwards or forwards and create less heat. Diamond drill bits are usually less sharp than traditional carbide drill bits, but beginners can also season their diamond bit before using it on their clients to prevent rough edges by simply running it to the edge of a new file. Don’t forget to clean and disinfect after each use to prevent cross contamination.

Ceramic bits. Similar to carbide with fluted cuts in them but made of ceramic instead of metal. They’re slightly softer and do not produce as much heat. They come in different sizes, shapes and grits but usually work in one direction. Ceramics work best on filing gel polish as it’ll give a smooth finish.

Buffing bits. These are designed for buffing natural nails or skin. They can be made by silicone or rubber and used together with buffing cream to polish and shine nails.

Additional features of nail drill bits

Level of abrasion. Although not a universal standard, some manufacturers use the following colour-coding system to identify the abrasiveness of carbide, diamond or ceramic bits:

  • White & yellow – Ultra fine
  • Red – Medium fine
  • Blue – Medium
  • Green – Medium coarse
  • Black – Coarse

Size and speed. Drill bits can have different sizes. For a hand manicure, a smaller size is advisable while for the pedicure it can be bigger. Keep in mind that the smaller the bit is the faster it rotates and vice versa.

Shapes and techniques. There are many different drill bit shapes on the market and each has its own technique to be used. Here are a few of the most popular ones:

  1. Cone shape. This is used for removing products in hard-to-reach areas around the edges and sidewall of the nail plate or the large portion of the products usually during infills. It can be used also for filing off the length of the nails. It can be ceramic or carbide, straight or curved, narrow or wide.
  2. Needle shaped. Carbide needle-shaped drill bits are designed for cleaning or filing off any acrylic or gel products on the nails.
  3. Cylinder. This is good for filing to a desired length or changing nail shape.
  4. Rounded cylinder. This shape is great for filing the sidewalls, cuticle removal and removing hard skin around the nail.
  5. Cross-cut shaped. These bits offer diagonal cuts perpendicular to the axis of the bur. The rounded smooth top allows you to easily reach the cuticle and sidewall without damaging the skin.
